About
Writer, photographer, 70′s and 80′s music freak, film aficionado, consummate navel gazer. I guess if I had to label my most prominent traits, those are the current go-tos. I suppose I could also add introvert, spouse, friend, internet junkie.
In the writer camp, I guess I excel. Not only do I like to write for myself in the form of countless journal entries, ritualistically handwritten with a fountain pen, I also like to publish my stuff. I’ve published two versions of my journals dating from 1986 to 1998, and I also put together a book containing all of my essays written in my undergraduate degree. To top all that off, writing is what I do for a living. No, I’m not a ‘blogger’ per se, not one of these people who do nothing but blog for cash and then put a book out of their blog’s content. I write technical documentation for a software company. I get paid to write, even if it’s not writing about my own thoughts.
As far as photography goes, it’s been a growing hobby of mine since the turn of the century (I love how that makes it sound like ages ago). I get a certin charge out of finding scenes, capturing them, and then sharing them. It’s a great little way for me to exercise the creative muscle that I don’t really get to flex at work.
My love of 70′s and 80′s music is silly. I can probably give you the lyrics for most songs that hit the charts in that 20 year frame, and I love the feeling I get listening to the stuff. There’s so much good music. It’s really sorta crazy. It moves me to the point where I sometimes try to create my own music, most often in the form of covers of my favourites, but also some original works here and there. I like to engineer music and sound. It’s a hoot.
Film and I go together well, and I enjoy taking in at least one movie each week. Oscar season is always a trip, and I make every effort to see all the Best Picture nominated films each winter. Mostly, I like my dramas, and independent releases, but I will also enjoy the occasional super hero flick or blow-shit-up action movie. The horror genre is endless fun for me, and comedy, when done well, is a great way to spend some time. I also live for great sci-fi, although it seems to have found a better home on TV of late. More’s the pity, as I don’t even have cable.
As far as navel gazing, it’s my interest in all things we as a species do not understand and the striving to make sense of it all that I find endlessly fascinating. It’s what drove my degree in Honours Religious Studies with minors in Psychology and Philosophy. It’s what still drives my learning about everything from Buddhist mindfulness teachings to Golden Dawn esotericism to Christian Gnosticism. I love ideas that are deep and warm and I love to swim in them as though they’re some sort of womb. God is nothing if not interesting.
As an introvert, I don’t have a load of friends, I don’t go out much, I spend a lot of time in my own company, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I dont’ drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t do drugs, and I like my zafu. I am happily attached to my spouse of 11 years, and she and I like our little house and big screen TV.
The time I spend on the internet is borderline disturbing, and I am what I suppose is an information hound. It’s sorta getting to me, and I’m trying to pare it down just so I have more time to read and spend doing other things. This space, it’s a little dangerous. What would you be doing if you weren’t online? I try to answer that and follow through more and more.
Anyway, anything else you wanna know, you can shoot me a line.
